Forgotten Felines is a registered Not for Profit organisation that is dedicated to the welfare of abandoned cats and kittens found on Aucklands North Shore. Forgotten Felines care for abandoned kittens (and occasionally pregnant females) until homes can be found for them. Unfortunately we don't have facilities, and do not have a cattery. The Fosterer's bring the kittens into their own homes till permanent homes can be found. They also care for a number of cat colonies. The colony cats are de sexed and fed daily by dedicated feeders.
Please note that as the abandonment of kittens has become prolific, Forgotten Felines is severely limited by the number of kittens that they can take in. Unfortunately each kitten season sees a rise in the numbers of abandoned and wild felines. If you have a cat or kitten, please have it desexed . Having an animal desexed will help control the wild population.
Forgotten Felines ask that if someone in your neighbourhood has moved house and left their cat behind, please take it to the SPCA . Unfortunately Forgotten Felines doesn't have the resources to take in these cats.
Please note that if an abandoned cat is not helped, it will breed and before you know it, you will have a colony on your doorstep (one breeding pair can produce up to 40 offspring in a two year period). The community needs to get behind these cats to help prevent the increase of wild kitten colonies.
Forgotten Felines was founded by Sylvia Fairburn in 1995 when she discovered a colony of cats in Browns Bay. Soon other colonies were brought to Sylvias attention and a newspaper article attracted the first two volunteers. Since then Forgotten Felines has grown steadily and now has over 40 dedicated volunteers who either trap, feed the colony cats, or foster kittens. Now the organisation is helping an increasing number of abandoned cats and kittens. These were once companion cats and have been made homeless through no fault of their own, usually left behind when their owners move house.
They are also getting more litters of kittens which have been dumped and left to starve. It is an ever increasing problem, the magnitude of which many people are unaware of.
Forgotten Felines would not be able to do the work they do without the dedicated support of the volunteers. The volunteers are split into three categories: Feeders, Trappers, and Fosterers.
Feeders are dedicated to caring for the wild cats and kittens in the 12 colonies Forgotten Felines cares for around the North Shore. This usually includes feeding the animals, and watching for any new colony members.
Trappers are vital in controlling the feline populations. Trappers use the TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) method, as it is recognised throughout the world as the best way of keeping stray cats under control, as the adults are usually too wild to be rehomed. Patience is required to be a trapper, as it takes time to trap the wild felines.
Fosterers are also an important part of the process. Fosterers, with care and time, tame our wild kittens so they can be adopted into new homes. This may take several weeks to achieve, and without the care and determination of our fosterers many kittens would be in colonies instead of loving homes.
